EDM at The Grammys!

If you keep up to date with electronic music whatsoever... you have undoubtedly heard by now that Skrillex took home 3 Grammys this year. Before I go on... YEEEEEEAAAAAAAUUUUUUUHHHHHHHH!!!!! Ok. Got that out.

Not only does this mean a great deal for the superstar and his rising fame, but the whole vibe surrounding the EDM scene during the last week or so has really been something special. In the days prior to the Grammys themselves, Skrillex (as well as the Mau5 and just about every other big name in the scene) has made it quite clear that win or no win, 5 nominations is a huge accomplishment for the entire dance music collective, as it sets the bar for every bedroom producer out there. Electronic musicians should be at least at par with pop music (I'll save the pop bashing for another day) no matter how conventional their sound is, and Skrilly has shown that. We already know how legitimate and talented our producers/DJs are, but to finally be recognized for it on this scale is incredible.

Deadmau5 wasn't forgotten at the awards this year either, with 3 nominations, a solid performance with The Foo Fighters, as well as a hilarious prank at the expense of his pal Sonny. For those of you who missed it, the Mau5 rocked a T-shirt featuring Skrillex's private cell number on live television. Pure jokes, I love these two!

Anyways, a sincere congrats to Skrillex and all of you producers, DJs, beatmakers, bass slappers, triangle twangers...whatever! Heres the EDM highlights from the big show, starting with Skrillex's moving award speeches from the pre-telecast segment.

Very cool insight on Skrillex's popularity and his insane work ethic from music industry peers, as well as friends/producers Caspa, 12th Planet, and Zedd

Lastly, Skrillex threw a new track preview up after the Grammys. As always there will be criticism along with a new sound, but I really enjoy this upbeat feel good track from Sonny, hope you do too!

Escape From Electric Mountain

Man... Feed Me NEVER disappoints. He's one of those producers that just constantly pumps out sonic goodness. My expectations < The mad skillz of Feed Me... Every time.

Here's the new EP "Escape From Electric Mountain". Feed Me's collab with Hadouken has been blowing my mind for awhile now, I still haven't heard "Trichitillomania" at anything resembling a safe volume level, and DJs; check out that sneaky Blood Red outro on Relocation... get mixin!

Mista Moombahstic

Not going to lie, I tried to pawn off my Mista Moombahstic articles on a friend recently... Not because I don't love the music, but because I can't say I am fully educated in the genre quite yet. That being said, I know music, and I know good music when I hear it. So! Here are my down-tempo dance picks of the last few weeks... You stay classy San Diego.

Big Fat Fridays -10-

One of the biggest dubstep hotspots in Canada has got to be beautiful British Columbia, having churned out heavyweights Excision, Datsik and Downlink. I'm sure you've stumbled across those names before in my bass-based Big Fat Fridays, and today I shall be featuring a few tracks from Excision's new album "X Rated"!

Now touring with a 100,000 watt sound system designed specifically to deliver an insane amount of bass to your face, there's no question Excision pushes the envelope when it comes to heavy sound. The fact that the mau5 himself released "X Rated" on his label shows the immense support his music has been receiving. The Album features close friends Datsik and Downlink on half the tracks, and boy could these guys separate the true bassheads from the infamous bandwagon bros who came to see the Skrillex band. These are the tracks that scare away those friends of yours who aren't intimately down and dirty with the EDM scene. But! If you're someone like me who lives for this stuff... prepare yo'self, we're goin in.

Full Track listing:
1. Excision and Messinian - X Rated
2. Excision and Downlink - The Underground
3. Excision - Ohhh Nooo
4. Excision and Datsik - 8 Bit Superhero
5. Excision and Savvy - Sleepless
6. Excision - Execute
7. Excision and Skism - Sexism
8. Excision and Downlink - Swerve

Big Fat Fridays -9-

Big Fat Friday's return, featuring my big fat grimey f*ck!n bass-heavy favorites!

Everyone's aware of Zed's Dead and The Killabits' rise to fame, putting Toronto on the dubstep map... I think this duo may be next in line. Gotta love this rendition of an old classic, it takes me way back! (just kidding, I'm 23... I don't say that yet.)

Basement Jaxx - Where's Your Head At? (Dr. Ozi Remix)

Like them on Facebook here!

Can't get this song out of my head! mainly that catchy vocal line... and the slick bass... it's all so great! I am appreciating Wilkinson's mixes more and more every release.

Jess Mills - Pixelated People (Wilkson Remix)

Here's an older track too, this is classy drum n bass.

Wilkinson - Every Time

Last but not least... I just took in a fresh EP from Vaski. I've been a big fan of his in-your-face heavy sound in the past, so this fresh batch of material excited me. Definitely check it out for yourself, but here's my first pick (also happens to be the title track) to give you a little teaser. I was especially digging those vocals from Audiodasity, also featured on the album in "Limitless".

Late Christmas Giveaways!

I was going to rant on about how my year was so busy and how I didn't have time to share all the great tunes I've been discovering, but who cares right? Bottom line... Fresh Tasty Beats is back! So if ya don't know... now ya know.

I'm going to kick things off with a bunch of free tracks I was VERY pleased to stumble upon over Christmas. Having heard most of these tracks live from their respective producers, I've been waiting for quality downloads to pounce on. I'll start with these two fine lads out of Toronto, who are no secret these days after pumping out so many quality releases. This name should be familiar by now, as The Killabits are only getting bigger this year.

Incase Christmas kept you too busy this, heres 8 Cray Nights, 8 days of free remixes and edits... Me like.

*if these hulkshare links are showin up silly, hit up the Original page http://thekillabits.com/8CrayNights/

Wait! There's more! Another favorite producer of mine was feeling generous this holiday season and released a free download of 4 years worth of remix material in anticipation of a new album. So many good tracks in here, this collection is a must have! I'd give an introduction... but you know Rusko already.
